Human-derived organoids—3D mini-organs cultured in vitro—have far reaching applications in tissue regeneration, disease modeling, precision medicine, and drug discovery. Researchers utilize a wide variety of techniques and technologies to develop, maintain, and assay different organoids, the robustness and reproducibility of which form the backbone of safe and effective pre-clinical and clinical applications.
In this Technique Talk, Dosh Whye will discuss how researchers use pluripotent stem cells to build 3D models of neural development.
Learning Objectives
- Embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells
- Culture systems for pluripotent stem cells
- 2D and 3D methods for neural derivation and neuronal differentiation
- Methods for characterizing neural identity
- Functional assays to study disease-related phenotypes
