Elucidating the Role of CRISPR/Cas in Single-Step Isothermal Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing Assays

Adding CRISPR-Cas to isothermal amplification assays is an intriguing way to improve nucleic acid detection for research and diagnostics. Quicker and easier than PCR-based methods, these modern molecular detection tools are particularly effective for cancer, infectious disease, and genetic disease screening. Many combination assays require two steps—nucleic acid amplification followed by CRISPR targeting—but combining the processes into a single step could result in a more accurate and efficient assay.

In this Journal Club, Kuangwen Hsieh will present his recent work testing several single step isothermal amplification and CRISPR-Cas assays for nucleic acid detection.
