To identify disease biomarkers for the nervous system, scientists must often look beyond cerebrospinal fluid samples, which are difficult to access. Blood is a common noninvasive biomarker source, but neurologic proteins are typically less abundant in blood than brain tissue or cerebrospinal fluid. New ultrasensitive immunoassays measure previously undetectable blood biomarkers, allowing researchers to appreciate small yet important concentration changes.
